There are more than 50 known causes of facial paralysis. Bells Palsy is a diagnosos of exlusion. When all other possibilities are excluded, including an MRI to determine if a tumor might be the causative factor, then and only then an one make a definitive diagnosis of bells palsy.

We use the term “palsy” to relate to an incomplete paralysis, while the term “paralysis” usually indicates a total or complete lack of movement/function.

Pregnancy-induced palsy is thought to be due to excessive fluid retention. Edema, and swelling surrounding the facial nerve, generally occurring the third trimester of pregnancy and the period immediately post-partum. Incorrectly called “Bells Palsy”, this form of facial palsy has a low incidence of spontaneous recovery. This form of facial palsy has an additional psychological trauma associated with the stress of pregnancy together with the asymmetry and abnormal motor function. This condition is far more common than is realized. Today, OB-Gyn specialists with expertise in pregnancy-induced palsies are prescribing steroids and anti-viral meditation for the patients during pregnancy. Of course, this is the option of each attending physician. Rehabilitation usually starts 30-60 days post partum.

The Bells Palsy Research Foundation, Inc (BPRF) offers a comprehensive facial rehabilitation program and perhaps the only INTENSIVE MULTI-DAY PROGRAM available.

The goal of the rehabilitation is to strengthen facial muscles, improve facial muscle function, and promote facial symmetry.
