One of the most important roles of the pharmacist is the role of being an educator and patients counselor regarding there medications -how and why- they are taking them.
In this case the pharmacist should make his best effort to educate the patient about her condition and explain to her clearly what is asthma and try to asses her condition through the asthma questionnaire and through the beak flow meter, then he should give her a quite good information about therapy choices including side effects expected with each choice.
also she should leave the pharmacy understanding that albuterol in neither anti-cough nor anti-allergic drug.
McLean and colleagues illustrated that the provision of targeted asthma education by community pharmacists resulted in a 50% reduction in symptom scores, an 11% increase in peak flow readings, 0.6 fewer days missed from school/work annually, a 50% reduction in the use of rescue medications, an overall 19% improvement in quality of life, and a 75% reduction in both medical and emergency room visits.
