     The response of HMC to Influenza
     A(H1N1) virus

In response to the global state of alert and the evolving nature of the disease, HMC has commenced practical measures to prevent the spread of the A (H1N1) flue in Qatar. The corporation supported the provision of:

1. Screening points for case identification including sampling, testing and management
2. Sampling and testing equipments.
3. Infection control measures in community and health care settings that includes the provision of masks.
4. The establishment of Pandemic preparedness subcommittee
5. HGH based hotline for the general public

The following screening points have been established:

Port of entry

• Doha airport
• Al-Meena (Doha Port)
• Abu-Samra border control

Centre of care

• Emergency department at Hamad general hospital
• Emergency department at Al Khor hospital
• Paediatric Emergency Centre (PEC)
• Al-Gharafa centre
• Al-Wakra (ED) walk in clinic

Access point (primary health centres)

• Abu-Bakr health centre
• West Bay health centre
• Old Airport health centre

Above centers / hospitals provide different level of care and management plan subject to available resources. The following are the available services at each point:

• Clinical assessment
• Influenza rapid testing (IRT)
• Antiviral (Tamiflu)
• CXR when indicated
• Observation facility when indicated
• In-patient treatment for more severe cases.



Paediatric Emergency centre (PEC):

Patients upto the age of 14 who test positive for Influenza A will be commenced on antiviral treatment and transferred to the PEC for further management. In the event of difficult swabbing and sampling of young children who are suspected cases, refer to PEC for sampling and testing.

The PEC team advised us that their preferred option for sampling method is the use of nasopharangeal mucus aspiration. Details of the method is given below.
