ADULT CARDIOLOGY Cardiology care started in Qatar with Adult Cardiology Service in 1978 at the old Rumaillah Hospital. The service started with a four-bed coronary care unit, a cardiology outpatient, a treadmill stress machine and an m-mode echocardiography machine. In the same year, the first permanent pacemaker in the history of Qatar was inserted. The Cardiology Service was a pioneer in instituting an appointment system for outpatients and establishing medical record keeping in the hospital in 1979. Demand for cardiology services grew rapidly. In 1979, to accommodate the increasing number of patients requiring cardiac care, the Cardiology Division moved to new and more spacious quarters in the Rumaillah Extension Wing where it had a modern Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and over twenty bed capacity for inpatients with separate male and female wards. The Division of Cardiology was the first service to move to Hamad General Hospital in January 1982 before the official opening of the hospital in February 1982. Staffing The Adult Cardiology medical staff is composed of 21 highly competent consultants, registrars and residents. Services Currently, the departments inpatient services are housed in one whole wing of the hospital and divided into the following sections: (1) the CCU with a 16-bed capacity, (2) the Progressive Care Unit which has 22 beds, and (3) the General Ward with 26 beds.
