PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY

The Pediatric Cardiology Section was established in 1984 and is composed of two highly qualified consultant pediatric cardiologists and one senior registrar providing consultation services. The team provides care to neonates, infants, and children with a variety of congenital heart diseases. More than 2,300 children with heart diseases are registered in the computer database. State of the art procedures have been introduced over the years. Routine non-invasive and semi-invasive examinations such as transthoracic, transesophageal and fetal echocardiography are regularly performed.

Diagnostic invasive investigations have been improved with digital angiocardiographic equipment. The team carries out cardiac interventional procedures such as balloon atrial septostomy, balloon valvoplasty for pulmonary and aortic valve stenosis, and angioplasty of aortic recoarctation. In 1996 closure of patent ductus arteriosus with coil and umbrella devices was introduced, a new and innovative interventional therapeutic procedure avoiding cardiac surgery.
