TUBERCULOSIS TREATMENT AND CONTROL UNIT

The Tuberculosis Unit ( TB Unit) is situated at the Rumailah Hospital. It consists of TB clinic and TB ward. Patients with contagious TB are admitted to the ward and treated until they are rendered non-contagious. They are then discharged back to the community.

Responsibilities of the TB clinic include following patients on anti-TB treatment, evaluating referrals of suspected TB cases from the Medical Commission and Preventive Medicine Department, screening close contacts of TB patients, patient education in terms of TB treatment and most importantly TB control for the whole country.

The TB Unit closely supervises all patients on TB treatment to ensure adherence. This is achieved either directly in the TB clinic or in any of the PHC's in the country, or through home superivised therapy. The unit evaluates about 2000 new patients with nearly 42,000 total visits annually.

The Nursing staff are not only experienced in handling patients, but are also kind and caring. The Unit also provides  excellent social service that help patients with many of their problems.

The Unit is run by Hamad Medical Corporation through its Department of Medicine.

Future Plans: To establish a nearby TB laboratory and X-ray facility and establishing a female ward.
