  The HMC celebrated the International Nurses Day on 15th May 2006. The theme of this year was Adequate nursing staff saves patients lives.
The occasion, which was organized in Ibn Al Nafis Auditorium, Womens Hospital, was attended by: Dr. Latifa Al Hotty, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of HMC; Dr. Hanan Al Kawari, the Assistant Managing Director for Operations; Dr. Saad Al Kaabi, the Medical Director; Mr. Khalid A. Al Mahmoud, the Director of Personnel Affairs Dept., Mr. Mohamed Jassim Al Jassim, the Director of Media Dept. in addition to a number of Nursing leaders and staff.
Dr. Hanan Al Kawari read a message on behalf of HE Mr. Turki Al Khater, the Managing Director, stating that: It became an obligation for the nurses to seriously handle information and deal with individuals with more flexibility and proficiency as the success of nursing always depends on the proper assessment and intercommunications skills.
The message further pointed out that: At present there is an increasing necessity for exploiting such skills in order to provide the Corporation with a nursing team characterized with self reliance and independency.
The occasion, however, has been invested in honoring nurses who have more than 25 years of service with HMC dubbed  Silver Jubilee years.
Nursing leaders honored for their long-term service(25-33 years) are: Dr. Nabila Al Meer; Aisha Saeed; Dr. Wasmia Dalham; Nasrah Al Narubi; Heila Salem; Hanna Saeed; Aisha Al Sayed; Nadya Khamis; Nawal Nassar; Shareefa Anbar; Sheikha Mahboub; Raya Mohamed; Maytha Al Bouanain in addition to long-term service nurses of other nationalities.

     The HMC celebrated, in May 2006, the graduation of the fourth batch of 112 Qatari and expatriates new nurses who have successfully completed their Intern training program in HMC. Some of these nurses have passed a four years Bsc. nursing program in the University of Qatar and others have been awarded the nursing diploma of the High Nursing Institute. All the graduated nurses have joined HMCs Hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centers.
 The celebration ceremonies, organized by HMCs Nursing Department, were attended by: Dr. Latifa Al Hotty, Chairperson of the Board of Directors; HE. Mr. Turki Al Khater, The Managing Director; Dr. Nabilla Al Meer, Director of Nursing Department; Mr. Mohamed Ali Jassim, Acting Executive Director of HGH; Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Director of Medical Education Department and a number of nursing leaders and instructors.
Dr. Al Hotty addressed the newly graduated nurses advising them to strive hard for the persistent scientific and professional enhancement of their nursing careers.
Mr. Al Khater stated that: the Corporation has, recently, improved the allowances and benefits of the nursing staff to vie with the healthcare providers institutes in the region, adding that the Corporation solicit for the recruitment of sufficient number of nursing staff and maintaining of the current cadre. He further wished the graduates successful professional careers.
 Dr. Nabilla AlMeer pointed out that: the nursing curriculum, which shall be implemented by the Nursing College, has witnessed many enhancements and modifications through the introduction of specific techniques which focus on quality standards, supports training and scientific research, abide by the prevailing moral standards and the adoption of new technologies. At the end of the event certificates have been distributed for the graduates and the following nursing staff instructors have been honored:
Antonia Limpada, Tawfeeq Al Raoush, Ihssan Adeban, Ayman Tardhy and Charlotte Hydar.

 

Early Detection of Genetic Disorders Program in Qatar Saves (26) Children from Disability


 

     Functions of the Early Detection of Genetic Disorders Program in Qatar, which are currently in progress at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), hosted during May 2006 by Prof. Dr. Martin Linden, Metabolic Disorders Consultant at Pediatric Hospital of Hiedelberg University in Germany.
In a press conference, attended by Dr. Ghassan Mustafa Abdou, Consultant at HMCs NICU and Mrs. Balquis Al Khazraji, Project Department Coordinator, Dr. Linden revealed that, during his last visit to Women Hospital to follow up the Program, he has diagnosed two new cases of Genetic Disorders in the early stages of Metabolic Disorders, thing that make them responsive to immediate treatment and eliminate severe complications which may lead to retardation and / or even early death.
Dr. Ghassan Abdou addressed the press conference stating that since the inception of the Early Detection of Genetic Disorders Program in Qatar in September 2003 a total of 22,616 newborns have been screened for Genetic Disorders where 26 cases of them tested positive, bringing the rate of prevalence Genetic Disorder to 1: 870.
Moreover, the Program aims at the screening of 25 genetic and inherited categories of disorders, particularly those associated with metabolic disorders, which if left untreated or duely unscreened may cause retardation and or early death.
Concerning the new phase of the Program in Qatar, Dr. Ghassan pointed out that Dr. Hilal Al Refai, the Director of the Program in Qatar, in close cooperation with Hiedelberg University and HMC Projects Management, have laid down the appropriate plans for the establishment of a local laboratory for Newborn Genetic Disorders Screening at Rumaillah Hospital. Work on this project is likely to start early next year, whereas two laboratory technicians from HMC have already been sent to Germany to receive the appropriate training on such type of screening.


 


The Third Phase of Children Hearing Loss Early Detection Program launched



      The third phase of the National Program for the Early Detection of Hearing Loss in children of 3-5 years of age has be launched during May 2006. A total of 300 children have been screened whereas 15 of them were found to be suffering from hearing problems announced Dr. Khalid Abdul Hadi, Consultant and Head of Audiology and Balance Unit and Head of the Program.
Dr. Khalid Abdul Hadi further pointed out that 37103 children have been screened during the first and second phases of the program, which were conducted during the period 2003-2006, whereas 732 cases of hearing loss problems have been recorded, 38% of them with sensoneural hearing loss and 62% with conductive hearing loss.
Pertaining to the third phase, Dr. Khalid elaborated that the objective of hearing screening for children at preschool age is to ensure their sound hearing abilities prior to their admittance to school in order to eliminate any hindering obstacles for their learning capabilities.


  

Symposium on the Modus Operandi of
Organ Donation and Assessment of Donors


 


 



 

     Under the patronage of HE Sheikh Dr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al Thani, Vice-chairman of the NHA, and the attendance of a large number of HMC physicians and nurses involved in organ donors healthcare, the Organ Transplantation Committee organized, on 7th May 2006, a specialized scientific symposium at Doha Intercontinental Hotel titled The Modus Operandi And Assessment of Organ Donors.
Dr. Youssuf Al Muslamani, Consultant and Head of Nephrology Department and Head of the Organ Transplantation Committee, inaugurated the oneday symposium dubbed You can help stressing, in his inaugural speech, on the importance of organ donation, specially kidney donation that saved the lives of hundreds of kidney failure patients.
The objective of the Symposium, which has been also attended by Dr. Abullah Al Ansari, Head of Urology Department, Dr. Ryadh Abdulsattar, Urology Consultant and Dr. Omar Aboud, ex-president of the Arab Board for Renal Disease, is to familiarize medics with the mechanism of live and cadaver organ and to review the Saudi experience in this field.
Guests from The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, namely Dr. Zuhair Al Kawi, Consultant Nephrologist; Dr. Bishar Al Attar, Medical Director of Saudi Organ Transplantation Center; Dr. Abdul   Qaoum Saleh; Dr. Hassan Al Mughrabi and Dr. Hassan Al Khanani shed the lights, in their address to the symposium, on the methods of brain stem death diagnosis, the difference between normal death and brain death, selection and assessment of organ donors, ways of coordination with donors, the proper stage of donated organ and social coordination with donors and their families respectively.

 


Vascular Anastomosis Workshop

 

    Hamad International Training Center (HITC) of the HMC organized its first workshop on Vascular Anastomosis, during the period 10th-13th May 2006. The objective of the workshop, which shall be organized on regular basis, is to train physicians of various specializations on the latest techniques used for the repair of arteries in addition to other various procedures used in vessels surgeries. This course shall considerably contribute in lessening blood bleeding complications resulting from trauma and traffic accidents.
 Course instructors were Dr. Abdulwahid Al Mulla, Head of CCS Department; Dr. Sheikh Hassan Al Thani, Consultant CCS and Dr. Amr Faris, Consultant Vascular Surgery and Director of the workshop.
Trainee physicians, participating in the workshop, have conducted practical experience on vascular anastomosis on goats vessels. 

 


HMC Organized a Workshop to Review its Emergency Services Enhancement Plans

 

    The Accident & Emergency Department and EMS of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) organized on 30th May 2006, with the participation of physicians, nurses and administrators, a training workshop on the services extended to the customers and ways and means to further enhance them.
The workshop, which was attended, also, by some distinguished public and media personalities, discussed the drawing up of a working plan which goes in line with the Corporations strategy to boost and reinforce its relationship with the patients and improve its image among its customers through the upgrading of the quality of its medical care services, especially emergency services, to reach the international quality standards.
Dr. Hamid Ghareeb, Physicians Supervisor and In-charge of A&E external activities explained that; The objective of the workshop is to be acquainted with the A&E customers concerns and viewpoints, assess the medical services and the adequacy and competency of the medical team performing these services.
 Ms. Tula Beltolla, Head of Customers Services Section, said that: The Section is very keen and serious to followup customers complaints and be acquainted with their respective viewpoints adding that: The Corporation has recently initiated a new policy through which a number of questionnaires are addressed to the customers  to explore their complaints, recommendations and concerns which are then studied analyzed and eventually submitted to the concerned authorities of the Corporation.
Ms. Einas Adnan Malkawi, In-charge of training in the Personnel Affairs Department, stated that: Working groups and teams have already been formed to conduct discussions and then propose the appropriate plans for the enhancement of performance through training or any other suitable tools.
 The workshop, finally, embarked on the remarks raised during the discussions concerning the difficulties encountered by the visitors of the A&E and proposed the relevant solutions to overcome them.

 


 Thousands of new employees benefited from HMC Familiarization Program designed to help new recruits to be integrated in the Corporation


  Personnel Affairs Department of HMC organized a familiarization program to provide the new recruits, who recently joined the Corporation, with the necessary information pertaining to working regulations and techniques, policies and procedures adopted by HMC and implemented by the concerned Departments and Sections and specify the accountabilities and responsibilities of every employee.
This program, launched in September 2004 under the direct supervision of Mr. Khalid Abdalla Al Mahmoud, the Director of Personnel Affairs, regularly holds a one day weekly session in IbnAl-Naffis auditorium, with the participation of 120 employee.
Ms. Narjis Mohamed, the Coordinator of the New Recruits Familiarization Program explained that:Each session comprises seven lectures delivered by specialized Doctors, administrators and technicians.
 She further elaborated that: These sessions cover various topics such as: Information about Qatar and HMC, procedures of recruitment, HMC Vision and Mission, Personnel Affairs services, quality improvement initiatives, patients and family bill of rights, Health Information System (HIS), infectious disease control, anti-radiation techniques, health and safety precautions and employees healthcare program (Health insurance) .

    HMC Blood Bank objective is to maintain a sufficient and safe stock of blood to meet the increasing demand of the various blood groups and categories said a reliable resource in HMC Blood Donor Unit who emphasized the need for the pursuit of blood donation campaigns.
The Corporation, in view of its concern about blood safety, has introduced the latest techniques in processing blood components and definitively refrained from importing blood from abroad to protect patients from certain blood viruses. The source added.
