ADULT INVASIVE AND CORONARY REVASCULARIZATION PROCEDURES AT HAMAD MEDICAL CORPORATION
1982 – 2000
Invasive cardiology began in Qatar in 1979 1 and cardiac surgery in 1984. These activities are increasing gradually (Fig. 1). However, from 1994, we observe stabilization in coronary angiographies at 1.5 and cardiac surgery at 0.4 per 1000 inhabitants. In most European centers, the number of coronary angiographies and cardiac surgery per 1000 average 3 and 1 respectively 2,3.
Fig. 2 shows that since the introduction of percutaneuos coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in 1985, the number of coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) decreased gradually with a corresponding increase in the number of PTCAs, except for a brief decline in 1998. However, since 1999, there has been an overlap/crossover in the number of PTCA/Stent and CABG.
Fig. 3 shows that an average of 150 to 200 CABGs are performed per year, 85% of them to 3 or more vessels. © 2001 Hamad Medical Corporation
