DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS

The health needs of children have always been accorded great importance in the State of Qatar. Accordingly, a full program has been developed to meet the varied and multiple requirements of a comprehensive pediatric care.

The Corporation, has  initiated plans for a multi-specialty Children’s Hospital that would be linked by a corridor to the Women’s Hospital. In December 1997, it hosted the First Qatari International Pediatric Conference where experts from the Western and Arab worlds exchanged information and debated issues affecting the health of children.

The Department of Pediatrics at Hamad Medical Corporation is one of the largest clinical departments in the Corporation with a 163-bed capacity. The Department provides a full spectrum of pediatric care through its general pediatric and subspecialty clinics.

Urgent medical and trauma care is provided through the 24-hour Pediatric Emergency Center and the Accident & Emergency Department. Rehabilitation therapy for children with handicaps and multiple disabilities is provided at the Children’s Rehabilitation Unit at Rumailah. Their educational needs are also provided for by a Special Education School staffed by specialist teachers.

Subspecialty clinics in hematology/oncology, nephrology and neonatology were first offered in 1983. These clinical services were later expanded to include endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, rehabilitation, cardiology, nutrition and allergy/immunology service.

The opening of the Pediatric Emergency Center (formerly Children's Urgent Care Center) in Al Sadd in 1986 was a landmark achievement for the Department of Pediatrics. The PEC is a separate pediatric emergency facility that provides urgent care (other than trauma) to children below 12 years of age. It has an 18-bed observation unit for patients who are put on 24-hour monitoring.

Advanced and specialized medical care for pediatric inpatients is provided in the 93-bed medical wards at Hamad General Hospital.

The PICU was expanded in 1991 from an eight-bed facility to an 18-bed unit. This came about by relocating and expanding the PICU premises, updating its equipment, and providing centralized monitoring, on-site emergency blood testing (for blood gases and electrolytes), adjacent respiratory therapy services, etc.

The Neonatology Section has a capacity of 68 beds for sick neonates. The section consists of an NICU, Intermediate Care Unit, and an Isolation Unit.

The Children's Rehabilitation Unit at Rumailah Hospital provides both long- and short-term care to pediatric patients with developmental disability. This unit has a total capacity of 24 beds in addition to Day Care services.
