Qatar had 10,608 live births in 1998 from 10,500 deliveries that took place at the Women's Hospital. The number of intrauterine deaths were 79. As in the past, there was no maternal death.

The Labor and Delivery Unit attended to the birth of 21 sets of twins, 14 triplets and 2 quadruplets during 1998. The number of multiple pregnancies in 1998 were 174; it was 139 in 1997; 154 in 1996 and 161 in 1995.

The number of babies who had less than 37 weeks of gestation were 731 while babies with a birth weight of under 2500 grams were 965. There were 647 macrosomic infants who weighed over 4 kilos at birth.

Of some concern to authorities are the growing number of diabetic mothers and those who get diabetic while pregnant. There were 76 diabetic mothers and 375 gestational diabetic mothers in 1998 compared to 46 and 158 respectively in 1997.
