Outpatient and Ambulatory Care

Hours of Operation

Outpatient clinics at all hospitals are open Sunday-Thursday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. An evening Consultant Clinic is operated by Consultants from each clinical department at Hamad General Hospital and Women’s Hospital. Fees are charged for this clinic. These clinics are available from 5:00 – 8:30 PM Sunday to Thursday.
 

Registering Your Appointment

Patients must schedule their appointments in person at the reception desk in the Outpatient Department.

New Patients: What To Bring With You
Please bring the following documents at the time of your appointment:

Valid Health Card; and,
Referral Letter(s) on initial appointments only; and
Passport / ID copies;
- Female: passport copy plus proof from sponsor (example: husband’s passport or employer letter or sponsor letter)
- Female unmarried / minor patients: copy of your guardian or sponsor’s passport
- Male: copy of passport or ID
A copy of a marriage certificate or other proof of marriage document with exemption for single patients (for admission to Women’s Hospital Only) and/or,
Birth Certificate for only a neonatal appointment.

Returning Patients: What To Bring With You
Please bring the following documents at the time of your appointment:

Valid Health Card; and,
Referral Letter for additional specialty referral if indicated; and,
Any old Appointment Cards (if applicable).

After 6 months, if you have not been an active patient, you will need a new referral from your primary healthcare provider.

Payment For Services

If payment is required, payment for your appointment is due in full prior to being seen for your appointment. The receptionist in the Outpatient Department will direct you to the Cashier to pay for your appointment. Upon payment of fees, return to the reception desk to submit your payment receipt. The Receptionist will release your file and you will be taken to the assigned clinic for your
appointment.

Waiting To Be Seen

Please wait in the designated waiting area for your clinic until the Nurse calls you. We will do our best to insure that you are seen at your scheduled time however, there can be delays. Our staff will keep you informed about your appointment if there is a delay.

Making A Follow-Up Appointment

If you need to make a follow-up appointment, the Nurse will write your next appointment on your Appointment Card based on your Physician’s instruction. You should take this card to the Outpatient Reception desk to complete the registration of this appointment.

Checking Appointments Services

You can view information for any appointments that is booked for you in HMC website. You should click on Services icon and select Check Appointments by clicking on this word then follow the steps as per instruction to check your appointments.

Additional Tests and Procedures

Your Physician may require additional tests and procedures immediately following your appointment. The Nurse will direct you to the departments, for example Radiology or Laboratory where you will complete the recommended tests. Once completed, you are to return to the Reception desk in the clinic after you finish the test(s) and/or procedure(s). Your Physician will discuss the results of your test(s) that day. Please be prepared for wait times. If it is not required, the result will be posted to your medical record and your physician will discuss them with you in your next appointment. For a routine ultrasound, an appointment will be required. Please see the Outpatient Department Receptionist to arrange this appointment.

If You Are Given A Prescription(s)

Pharmacy services are available in all Outpatient Departments. When you take your prescription(s) to the Pharmacy, they will give you a receipt so that you can make payment, if required at the Cashier prior to picking up your filled prescription(s). Please refer to the “Discharge Plan” see the “Going Home” section of this booklet. The Pharmacist will instruct you about the correct dosage and the possible side effects that may arise your medication(s).

Referral To Another Specialty

Your Physician may want to consult another Physician specialty. After receiving this referral, the clinic Nurse will direct you to the respective department for an appointment with the specialty Physician. This may occur on the same day or you may be required to make another day’s appointment.
 

Day Care Services

Procedures/surgeries that can be performed and completed on the same day are scheduled in Day Care. If you have been scheduled for a surgery/procedure in Day Care, the clinic Nurse will document “Day Care” on your Appointment Card according to the Physician instructions. You will then be directed to the Day Care Unit secretary to schedule your admission. Day Care instruction including fasting requirements, pre-op lab test work and arrival time will be given to you by the clinic Nurse. Please refer to the “Fasting Requirements for Surgery” in the “Preparing for Your Admission”section of this booklet.

If you will be treated at the Day Care of Hamad General Hospital, Rumailah Hospital or Al Amal Hospital, please report to the Day Care Unit to schedule your surgery/procedure immediately following your clinic visit. If you will be treated at the Day Care of Women’s Hospital, Day Care, please report to the Admission Office immediately following the clinic visit to schedule your admission.
 

Emergency Services

For a medical emergency, call “999”, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
HMC provides comprehensive emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Emergency Department(ED) in Hamad General Hospital

ED is situated between Women’s Hospital and OPD Hamad General Hospital indicated by a large red emergency sign. With the exception of obstetrical and gynecological emergencies, the A&E provides emergency care to all ages of patients with acute injury, trauma and critically ill patients. For non-trauma pediatric care, please refer to the description below on the Pediatric Emergency Center (PEC). The department has well-equipped Pharmacy, Laboratory and Radiology areas for those patients requiring emergency medications, scanning, ultrasound and/or x-ray. In addition, the ED has access to an Operating Theatre for minor surgery cases. The Pharmacy provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week emergency coverage.

Emergency Department in Women’s Hospital (ED)

The Emergency Department at Women’s Hospital is located on the east wing of the Women’s Hospital. The Department is well situated for easy access by way of a dedicated entrance located between Hamad General Hospital Emergency Department and Women’s Hospital Outpatient Department. The ED cares for obstetrical and gynecological emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Laboratory testing is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if required.

Pediatric Emergency Center (PEC)

PEC is located on Al Saad Street at the Al Saad Roundabout. Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PEC provides routine medical emergency care for pediatric patients up to 12 years of age. Pharmacy, Radiology and Laboratory services are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Pediatric and Trauma Emergency Centers in the Primary Health Centers

Ambulance Trauma and Emergency Services are established in a number of the Primary Health Centers throughout Qatar. Each of these Centers is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency care.
