PREFACE

From the Editor-in-Chief

Dear Colleagues,

It is my continuing pleasure to bring to you the latest edition of the MEJEM. This issue co-incides with a number of major events in the region.

The first is the imminent 3rd Qatar international Medical Congress, taking place from the 8th -13th of November, 2005, here in Doha. Our two previous congresses were so successful that we decided to make this years event the biggest and the best so far. We are anticipating around 3000 delegates for an exciting and stimulating programme of lectures, presentations and workshops. It is my sincere hope that we will be able to welcome many of our readers to the congress, so that you can enjoy that best learning opportunity of the year.

In the world of emergency medicine, this year has tested many of us to our limits. I am thinking particularly of this year list of natural and man-made disasters. We are still reeling from the news, and extent, of devastation in Pakistan and I know many readers will have been involved in the relief offerts being organized to help that survivors. This year has also brought us bombings, hurricane's and tsunami, all of which have brought death, devastion and injury to many around the world. These events force us to acknowledge that emergency medicine is not just confined to the comfortable surroundings of our hospital departments . As we deal with these types of incidents were, our strategies, techniques and outcomes form a new branch of emergency medicine. It is my hope that future issues of the MEJEM will bring you more information on these developments.

Finally , Our current issue takes a look at some of the more complex and unusual injuries seen in the emergency department. We have far original papers which make fascinating reading, as well as a number of thought provoking case studies. as usual, each of the articles manages to underline the diversity of our chosen filed. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have done putting it together.

Best wishes,

Dr. Abdul Wahab Al Mulseh, MD, FRCS (I), CABS
