The requirements for submission are in
accordance with the “Uniform
Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted
to Biomedical Journals” (www.icmje.org)
and the “World Medical Association
Declaration of Helsinki: Ethical
principles for Medical Research
involving human subjects [2004]
(www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm).
Manuscript
submission: If sending through
the post, or by hand, three copies of
the manuscript should be submitted plus
a CD-ROM containing a softcopy of the
manuscript in Microsoft’s ‘Word for
Windows’. Illustrations should be in
jpeg high resolution files. Tables and
figures should be clearly labelled. If
submitting via e-mail, the manuscript
and illustrations should be in be in the
formats mentioned above. Manuscripts
should be accompanied by a covering
letter providing complete contact
information for the corresponding author
and whether the authors have published,
or submitted, any related papers from
the same study.
Manuscript preparation: Manuscripts
should be double spaced with wide
margins. Do not justify the text, i.e.
leave the right hand-side ‘ragged’. Font
size should be 10, 11 or 12 point and
style should be Times New Roman, Arial
or Courier. Do not use the automatic
formatting features of your word
processor such as endnotes, footnotes,
headers, footers, boxes, etc. Provide
appropriate headings and sub-headings as
in the Journal. We use the following
hierarchy: BOLD CAPS, bold lower case,
Plain Text, Italics. Cite illustrations
in numerical order (Fig. 1, Fig 2, etc.)
as they are first mentioned in the text.
Tables must be embedded where cited in
the text. Images must not be embedded in
the text but submitted as individual
files. All pages should be numbered
consecutively, containing the following
sections:
1. Title page:
Concise titles are preferred wherever
possible. The title page should include:
the authors’ names and institutional
affiliations; the name of the department(s) and institutions(s) to
which the work should be attributed;
disclaimers (if any); corresponding
authors with their name, mailing
address, telephone, fax and e-mail and
publishable address for correspondence;
sources of support (if any) and the
total word count.
2. Conflict of interest information.
3. Abstract: The abstract should not
exceed 250 words and should outline the
purpose of the article. Original
articles require structural abstracts
defining objectives, materials, methods,
results and conclusions.
4. Introduction: The introduction should
briefly describe the study, question,
scope and relevance to emergency
medicine.
5. Methods: Should include the study
design, population, setting, etc.
6. Statistics: Describe statistical
methods with enough detail to enable a
knowledgeable reader, with access to the
original data, to verify the reported
results.
7. Results: Should include the
statistical analysis of the data.
Results should be presented in a tabular
or graphic form and should be referred
to in the text.
8. Discussion: The discussion should put
the results in the context of the
current information about the study
topic.
9. Figures and figure legends: Figures
and figure legends must be referred to
in the text in sequential order and
submitted on separate pages. If a figure
has been published, acknowledge the
original source and submit written
permission from the copyright holder to
reproduce the material.
10. Photographs: If photographs of
people are used, either the subjects
must be unidentifiable or their pictures
must be accompanied by written
permission to use the photograph(s).
11. References: Should be listed in
numerical order with abbreviated journal
names according to the Index Medicus
Style. If there are more than three
authors the first three authors should
be listed followed by “et al”.
As a general rule, manuscripts and
illustrations are not returned to the
author regardless of whether or not they
are accepted for publication. Editors of
the Journal are not responsible for the
views and ideas of the authors as
presented within their manuscripts.
Reprints may be available if ordered in
advance when the manuscript is
submitted.
Receipt of manuscripts: Upon receipt,
the corresponding author will be issued
with a unique reference number as an
identifier for all correspondence linked
to the manuscript. In addition, an
‘Authorship Form’ will be sent which
must be completed and returned to the
Journal before acceptance can be made.
